BUSINESS TALK: WHY I DON’T READ SUPPLEMENT REVIEWS

by Matt Weik

I was asked the question a few days ago about how much faith I put into supplement reviews. My answer was direct and to the point – I DON’T HAVE ANY. In fact, when I purchase a product, I don’t want to look at the supplement reviews. Not even one of them. Below I’m going to break down my thought process on this, and some of you may sit there and agree with what I’m saying, and some of you may wholeheartedly disagree – both are perfect reactions as I’m not trying to sway you one way or another. I just want you to get into the business owner’s mind and how they view supplement reviews.

THE COACH GREGG, CHEF RUSH FEUD

by Christian Duque

It seems an all out war has erupted between two of the fitness industry’s most talked about fitness celebrities. As is often the case, much of the discussion in bodybuilding centers around nutrition, training, and supplementation. How much do people actually eat, how much do they lift, and are they natural or not. These discussions have been causing rifts from the beginning of time, online. For years, we saw people up in arms on the message boards.

NICK STRENGTH & POWER PRESSURES KAI GREENE

by Christian Duque

I’m sure when Nick reads this article, he won’t be happy. I just hope he doesn’t block me on Instagram. Oh wait, he’s already done that. I’m not 100% sure why, but I’m a journalist in the fitness industry and he’s the most popular Youtuber. Anytime a content creator releases content, they should be ready, not just for the accolades, but for the criticisms – constructive or otherwise – as well. Nick, like his mentor/predecessor Luimarco, doesn’t take well to any blowback. A couple years ago, I tried to be the bigger person, and tried to mend fences when our mutual friend Hector Mendoza of Muscular Development, introduced us to each other at the Mr. Olympia. We shook hands, chit chatted a bit, and everything seemed cool. Well, that didn’t last long. A few months later, I noticed I was blocked again. Oh well, that’s an aside for the world, but I felt it necessary to include.

YOU’RE DOING IT ALL WRONG WITH YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA FITNESS PAGE

There is definitely no shortage of people out there who have a social media fitness page. If you engage with others on Instagram who enjoy fitness, bodybuilding, or working out in general, your entire feed in the search is full of great fitness content that can help get you motivated. That being said, it’s absolutely saturated and if you want to stand out, you need to think about your long-term social media strategy.

PROBLEMS THAT ARISE FROM INFLUENCERS USING FAKE WEIGHTS

by Matt Weik

They say that no publicity is bad publicity but I tend to disagree. Bad publicity may get you attention and likes (which many are after on social media), but it can also damage your reputation and even career. After a year full of people using fake weights, in the back of my head, I kept telling myself that these foolish behaviors would end – but I was WRONG.

TESTOSTERONE, NO LONGER A FOUR LETTER WORD?

by Christian Duque

As is often the case, times have changed and people change as they become more aware of things. For many, sports supplements have always had a negative connotation. Many people outside bodybuilding, simply, don’t understand it. They think it’s all about illegal drugs, shady people, and weird sexual obsessions. They see people on stage, flexing, and quite frankly, some might even mistake it for stripping.

GOODBYE TO A GOOD FRIEND – RIP ANDY HAMAN

by Christian Duque

Andy Haman was one of the good guys. He was a real friend to me when I was first getting started doing event coverage. Whenever I’d see him, whether at the Arnold Classic or local shows, we’d always talk and share some laughs. He was one of the few guys whose personality, and overall demeanor, wasn’t affected by the camera. He was honest and goodhearted; he truly cared about his fans and he wanted to make a difference through fitness.

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ESPORTS TO BECOME LARGER THAN REAL SPORTS?

by Matt Weik

Do you remember being a kid and thinking how cool it would be to play video games all day long? Even better, the ability to grow up and play them as your career and get PAID to do so? Well, that reality is here thanks to Esports, and despite what the diehard sports fans will say, they are taking a legitimate shot at knocking off many real sports in terms of popularity and viewers.

WHY DO I LOVE PLANET FITNESS?

by Christian Duque

The ages old debate rages on, is Planet Fitness really a gym? I’m sure to those who train in dungeon gyms, with guys who still wear fanny packs, it may not be. You won’t find guys deadlifting, cleaning and pressing, or doing leg presses with people sitting on the sleds, there. It’s not that kind of a place. They also don’t blast heavy metal or gangsta rap. Their walls aren’t covered in mildew, but you can eat off their floors, and their bathrooms are usually immaculate.
