Bodybuilding’s Indomitable Rebel – GREGG VALENTINO

by Christian Duque

Let’s not beat around the bush here, I’d like to come out immediately and say how much I value my friendship to BOTH Gregg Valentino and Joe Pietaro. This article isn’t about Gregg’s departure from Muscle Sport Mag, at least not any more than it’s about his departure from Muscular Development – both are old news of varying degrees. This article is about a very unique individual who’s liked and respected by athletes from several eras, members of the press, and MOST importantly by the FANS. No one can get Gregg to say what they want, wear the clothes they tell him to, or perform tricks for treats like some kind of an industry lap dog.

The Great Debate: Fat vs Sugar

by Matt Weik

Once upon a time people who roamed the earth would eat food to sustain energy and to survive. They didn’t have the luxury of half-gallons of ice cream, bags of potato chips, French fries, and beer. But all those things taste great, right? True. But our mentality has shifted from the days of survival to the days of comfort. American’s sit down and eat to fulfill an emotional need. At gatherings people stand around a bunch of food that most people probably aren’t hungry for and they eat anyway to be social. This is one of the many reasons why such a large percentage of American’s are overweight or obese.

The Truth About Drugs in Sports

by Josh Hodnik

Bonds, Clemens, and Armstrong have become synonymous with steroid use in sports. Any time a high profile athlete is accused of using any performance enhancing drug, the story is plastered across the news and social media. The reason the media puts an emphasized focus on these stories is because people enjoy reading about scandals, and more importantly, they thrive on seeing an athlete fail that has succeeded in areas where most never will. Let’s face it, being a great athlete is viewed as being a pretty big deal these days. Professional athletes earn a salary and live a lifestyle that can be envied by most.

Defy the Meat Head Sterotype

by Cade Thomas

Bodybuilders have a way of turning off the general public. Whether it be other members in the gym or people at the grocery store, the reactions are not always positive. Depending on where you live and the general activity level of the citizens, it’s common for many to respond to the sight of a bodybuilder with an “eew” or another disparaging remark rooted in insecurity. It would be extremely ignorant of me to assume that everyone secretly wants to look like a bodybuilder or that a hyper muscular physique is appealing to everyone, but the fact is that many people simply put bodybuilders down because they are a walking reminder of how little effort they are putting into their own personal goals and physical state.

Big Pharma vs. the Supplement Industry

by Josh Hodnik

Americans consume more prescription drugs than anyone else in the world, by a pretty large margin. Coincidentally, Americans also surpass everyone else in illicit drug use. This gives reason to believe that a reliance on prescription medications to treat certain ailments can lead to dependence. Maybe this is what Big Pharma has wanted to achieve. $2 trillion a year is spent on health care in the United States. Much of that is shuttled through the pharmaceutical industry.

Growing Into a Contest

by Blane Morton

From the dawn of bodybuilding, bodybuilders have been trying to find the right recipe for peaking at a contest. For decades, bodybuilders appeared close to contest shape on a year-round basis. Then, out of the gloomy streets of Birmingham, England a “Shadow” appeared. A monster named Yates would reinvent the game of bodybuilding. In fact, he helped coin the phrase, “size game,” as a new generation would try to play catch up to Dorian and his new level of size and density never seen before on a bodybuilding stage. With this new development of mass monster came the rise of the guru and along with that came a myriad of strategies to arriving not only peaked, but massive to boot.
