Stimulants and the Future of Pre-workout Drinks

by Matt Weik

We live in a world where people who use pre-workouts are focused only on one thing — stimulants. That’s right, they want to feel jacked up. They want to feel as if ants are crawling under their skin, that tingly sensation telling them their pre-workout product is working. If they don’t feel it, it’s not working—right? This mentality is what’s going to get people in a lot of trouble. Let me explain.

Jeopardizing Health in Pursuit of Bodybuilding Greatness

by Josh Hodnik

Most of us can recall particular dreams and goals as a child. While the goal itself may have changed as we got older, the thought of doing something extraordinary still remained. The need to do something great seems almost instictual or embedded in some people. It takes a strong work ethic, drive, and commitment to be successful. Internal drive, and willingness to do what others wont do are great attributes to have, but when does the sacrifice become too much?

At just 26 years of age, IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Dallas “Big Country” McCarver accomplished a great deal in his very short life. Beware of Fake Supplement Reviews!

by Matt Weik

You’re in search of a new supplement to try… What do you do? Look for reviews on new products, right? What if I told you most of the reviews out there today are fake and paid for by supplement companies? One of the largest online supplement retailers is the worst offender, and they don’t seem to care. Their excuse is “everyone is doing it these days”. What kind of answer is that? I won’t throw out their name, but it’s not too hard to figure it out.

Take Charge of Muscle Building and Fat Burning Hormones With Intermittent Fasting

by Josh Hodnik

We were once programmed to believe that a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet was the key to a fitter society that would be less prone to disease. That didn’t help matters and the rate of obesity and disease climbed. The low carb/high protein diet would eventually replace the low-fat diet as the answer to obesity. With this diet it was acceptable to consume large amounts of dietary fats. It’s still believed that a person can become lean and healthy while consuming large amounts of protein and fats, while avoiding carbohydrates. The argument here is that our ancestors ate in this manner and didn’t have an obesity problem like we do today. It can easily be argued that our distant ancestors spent a lot of time and energy hunting and preparing food, and the calorie demand would be much higher than it would be for a person living today’s lifestyle.

Fat Shaming vs Public Acceptance?

by Matt Weik

I’d like to start off this article by mentioning I have no issues with people’s weight, their skin color, their sexual orientation, their hair color, eye color, how big their ears are, car they drive, house they live in… You get the point. I worry about ME. If someone is happy being overweight, good for them. Do I believe it’s unhealthy and would love to see them work towards bettering their life and health? Definitely. But to each his own.

The Testosterone Stigma

by Josh Hodnik

I can’t imagine that there is any other substance found naturally in the human body that’s been more controversial than the hormone, testosterone. Even though it’s naturally produced in men, and in low amounts in women, its synthetic version is a Schedule III narcotic. To put how ridiculous this is into perspective, a comparison can be made to the female hormone estrogen. Like testosterone, estrogen is produced by both men and women. Estrogen is produced in much higher amounts in women. This hormone is what makes a woman a woman, and testosterone is what makes a man a man. High levels of estrogen in women have been reported to increase the risk of breast cancer.

Phosphatidylserine and Athletic Performance

Genuine advances in sports nutrition are rare, which is why the discovery back in the 90s that creatine supplementation really did improve anaerobic performance created such a stir. However, apart from caffeine use, there’s been no equivalent ‘magic bullet’ supplement for aerobic athletes. But according to Andrew Hamilton, new research on a naturally occurring compound called phosphatidylserine is proving very intriguing indeed
